Quick Stats:
Taurus is a Brazil-based company, Forjas of Porto Alegre, Brazil to be exact, and carries the title of being the Latin America’s largest handgun manufacturer. Since 1941 they have been making firearms, and they’ve been selling in the US since 1968.
The Taurus G2c is a revised version of their classic PT111 Millenium. The two pistols are the same except for the removal of the Hillary holes that served as Taurus’s locking feature.
You will find with this firearm a stable platform that’s compact, accurate, and reliable while still being affordable. The PT111 was famous for outperforming guns that were sold for twice as much.
Taurus offers a full line of pistols on the G2c platform to offer all the little tweaks to get it exactly right for you. You can purchase it chambered for either 9mm Luger or 40 S&W, depending on your preference.
The top slide is available in matte black or matte stainless. Everything is precision machined to tight tolerances. Any edges are beveled to prevent the possibility of it catching when it’s drawn from a holster. The top has a loaded chamber indicator to alert you that the gun is ready to go.
The pistol boasts a polymer frame that resists moisture, oil, wear, solvents, and salt. It’s lighter than a metal frame, and its ability to flex helps to absorb some of the recoils when fired. The frame comes in a variety of colors beyond the standard black. In addition to black, there is teal, purple, olive green, pink, and gray. The rough texture of the side panels provides a solid grip that doesn’t move once it’s in your hand.
An accessory rail adorns the front of the pistol. Perfect for mounting tactical lights or lasers.
Ergonomics aren’t a buzz word for Taurus. The grip is comfortable and doesn’t move around. You’ll notice how they nailed the grip-to-frame angle when you bring the gun to eye level, and the sights are already aligned on the object you are focusing on. The thumb memory pad lets you reliably place your hands in the same positions for repeatable performance.
You can purchase one of two sighting options. There are the standard white dots on the front and back sights, with the back being fully adjustable for elevation and windage. The other option is to get Taurus’s Ameriglo Night Sights, which feature green tritium inserts on the front and back. During the day, the large orange paint outline on the front sight still allows you to acquire the target rapidly.
When inserted, the baseplate for the magazine extends allows for a full three-finger grip. The standard magazine for the 9mm version is a double-column magazine that holds twelve rounds. If your state prohibits magazines that go over ten, they have you covered too.
The magazine release can switch sides, making it easy to adjust to left-handed shooters. You can access all of the controls without moving the pistol around too much. There is a manual safety along the exterior of the gun that prevents the trigger and the slide from moving. The trigger itself has a secondary lever that has to be pressed flat before the trigger will move.
The trigger is a single action with a restrike. There is a smooth pullback leading to a crisp six-pound pull. In the case of a misfire, this gun doesn’t need to be partially cocked again to have another go. The restrike feature allows you to pull the trigger through a heavier stroke to have a second pin strike. The shooter doesn’t need to wait for 30-60 seconds to stay safe.
The quality parts that go into making this pistol are backed up by an unlimited lifetime repair policy. Taurus has faith in how this gun will perform over the years.
The G2c seeks to be both compact and comfortable to shoot. It is slim and compact enough for concealed carry. It packs enough punch for effective home defense. It’s ergonomics make it comfortable enough to be fun to use for target shooting, all while being accurate. This firearm is versatile enough for armed professionals and recreational users alike.
Overall you won’t find any customers complaining. This gun delivers what it promises, which is a small, affordable CCW. The solid tackiness of the grip is a real boon. The comfort of the grip is something that is universally liked. Having the pinky extension on the magazine right out of the box is fantastic for shooters with bigger hands. The larger capacity is also a crowd favorite.
Some people love the trigger, while others think it’s a bit mushy. The recoil is manageable, and you won’t have any problems with it.
The performance at the range is decent. The accuracy it there, and it will get the job done. At short to medium distances, you will be able to stop anything you are pointing at. The adjustability of the sights is something you don’t often see on economical models. Some customers report that the gun has problems cycling cheap ammo, while others say that it cycles like a champ. There can be a bit of a break-in period to get everything you can out of the gun. Higher grade self-defense ammunition, though, always yields great results with this gun.
Overall this gun is hard to beat for the price. There are few guns available cheaper, and being able to get your hands on something reliable and fun to shoot while maintaining the low price point makes it even more impressive.
